Capitol/EMI’s Bhaskar Menon dead at 86

Posted March 7, 2021 by Floydian Slip

Bhaskar Menon, largely credited with making Pink Floyd a household name in the United States, died March 4 at his home in Beverly Hill, Calif. He was 86.

Menon, a native of Thiruvanthapuram, India, was founding chairman and CEO at EMI Music Worldwide, and served as president and CEO of Capitol Records in Los Angeles at the time Floyd released “The Dark Side of the Moon” in 1973.

“The story in America was a disaster, in that we really hadn’t sold records,” Floyd drummer Nick Mason says. “So they brought in a man called Bhaskar Menon who was absolutely terrific. He decided he was going to make this work, and make the American company sell (‘The Dark Side of the Moon’). And he did.”

Under Menon’s direction, “Dark Side” reached #1 on the Billboard chart and become one of the greatest selling albums of all time. In doing so he helped turn around Capitol’s finances, which were in shambles after the break-up of its biggest-selling act, The Beatles.

While helping steering “Dark Side” to success was perhaps his biggest achievement during the seven years he spent at Capitol, Menon also oversaw successful releases from other bands such as Wings, Steve Miller Band, Grand Funk Railroad, Linda Ronstadt, Helen Reddy and Natalie Cole.

Menon left Capitol in 1978 and the music business altogether in the early-’90s to found International Media Investments, an investment and consulting firm for media businesses.

Abbey Road to sell replica tape box for $275

Posted March 3, 2021 by Floydian Slip

Times is tough all over, we suppose.

Case and point: Abbey Road Studios, with full participation of Pink Floyd, according to the studios’ website, will sell a replica of the tape box that contains the band’s “The Dark Side of the Moon” (1973). On March 5, the studio will release a limited edition of 250 “folios” of the box priced at $275 each.

The studio describes the product as a replica of the “Quadrophonic discrete master – Side One EMI tape box, held deep within the EMI archive.

“Each handmade folio is numbered and includes a 500gsm box card black folder (37cm x 37cm with a 5cm lip) which encases the two replica litho prints (30cm x 30cm), recreated in exact life size dimensions and cradled with transparent corner holders,” according to the site. “Alongside this, it includes a leaflet looking back at the recording of The Dark Side of the Moon and a certificate of authenticity.”

Floyd made “Dark Side” beginning in May 1972 in Studio Two and Three at the EMI facility.

Abbey Road Studios says the actual “rarely seen” box is stored at EMI Archives in Hayes, London.

You can place your order online.

Here at “Floydian Slip” we’re bullish on all things Pink Floyd. So maybe we’re just feeling a little cynical today, but this seems a little excessive. Even to us.

The good news: International shipping to the U.S. is just $19.69.

Zoom lecture series to focus on Pink Floyd

Posted February 18, 2021 by Floydian Slip

Music professor Dr. Gilad Cohen will launch a Pink Floyd weekly lecture series March 3.

“The Floydian Style” will be an 8-part series presented live on Zoom. It’ll focus on the inventive ways lyrics, composition, arrangement, production, performance, and visuals have joined together to make Floyd one of the most successful bands of all time.

Cohen will present the first 80-minute session, “Pop and Psychedelia,” free on March 3, at 6:15 p.m. EST. Additional sessions will be $15 each, or $12 for students. The entire series is available for purchase in advance for $90, or $75 for students.

Video recordings of the sessions will also be available for two months. Users can buy the series any time, and receive recordings of the sessions they might have missed.

“The format is attractive since it allows free discussion,” Cohen tells us, “with participants asking questions throughout and suggesting songs and issues for discussion.”

Gilad Cohen, right; with Floyd producer/engineer James Guthrie, center; and 2014 conference co-producer Dave Molk

Cohen is an associate professor of music performance and theory at Ramapo College of New Jersey where he teaches a number of courses, including “Shine On: The Music of Pink Floyd.” In 2014 he co-produced “Pink Floyd: Sound, Sight and Structure,” an academic conference held at Princeton where he was studying.

Space is limited. Register in advance at Cohen’s website.
