Syd Barrett catalog to be reissued on vinyl

Posted July 9, 2023 by Floydian Slip

Third Man Records Syd Barrett package

Third Man Records will release Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett‘s three solo albums on colored vinyl as “The Solo Works of Syd Barrett” this summer.

The offering, part of the company’s “Vault” subscription plan, will consist of Barrett’s “The Madcap Laughs” and “Barrett” from 1970; and his “Opel” collection of alternate takes from 1988.

The albums, each pressed in 180-gram colored vinyl at the company’s Detroit plant, will come in a slipcase illustrated by Greg Ruth. The package will include a 7-inch single containing David Gilmour‘s covers of Barrett’s “Dark Globe” and “Dominoes.”

The LPs have been out of print for nearly 10 years, and have never been offered for sale together.

Gilmour’s “Dominoes” was recorded at the Royal Festival Hall in January 2002, and appears on the DVD “David Gilmour in Concert.” His “Dark Globe” cover was recorded live July 27, 2006, at Klam Castle, Austria, and appears on his “Arnold Layne” EP.

Deadline to join Third Man Records’s Vault subscription plan to receive the Barrett package is July 31 midnight CT. Each quarter, Vault members receive a package of limited edition, exclusive vinyl. Additional content in each package varies, but might include pins, posters, patches and photo books.

Quarterly subscriptions are $75; annual subscriptions are $280.

Posted July 3, 2023 by Floydian Slip

Nathan Gosnell has won our 11th annual Surrogate Bands Pink Floyd Cover Contest.

Gosnell, from Montrose, Iowa, took the prize with his recording of “Comfortably Numb.”

A multi-instrumentalist since he was 10, he can be seen and heard performing with his bands StumpTown and Big Guitars.

This past week, Gosnell had his winning entry played on “Floydian Slip” episode #1420 — a special episode of our weekly Floyd radio show that was devoted entirely to other artists’ recordings of Floyd music.

He also receives $200 in merchandise from the official webstore of Pink Floyd, shop.pinkfloyd.com.

Thanks to everyone who submitted entries to this year’s contest.

“Wet Dream” reissue coming

Posted June 30, 2023 by Floydian Slip

Wet Dream reissue

Rhino/Parlophone will release an expansive remix of Rick Wright‘s 1978 solo album “Wet Dream” on July 28.

Arriving on what would have been the Pink Floyd keyboardist’s 80th birthday — Wright died in 2008 at age 65 — the album will be available in a deep blue transparent marble vinyl, CD and Blu-ray. It’ll also be available for the first time on streaming platforms.

The album has been remixed in Dolby Atmos and 5.1 Surround Sound by Steven Wilson. Wilson started his remixing career in 2009 as a side-hustle to his work as a musician in bands such as Porcupine Tree. He’s revamped classic albums by many bands such as Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Roxy Music and Yes.

The “Wet Dream” reissue features new artwork commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Wright’s children and managers of his estate.

The cover art features the same unidentified person wearing red shorts swimming in deep blue waters of the sea rather than a pool. The image expands out to reveal a boat slightly out of their reach, a reference to the nautical theme of the record.

The image was shot by Costas Spathis, a photographer living and working in Greece, where Wright wrote the album. Graphic design is by Carl Glover.

The LP’s original artwork was designed by Storm Thorgerson and photographed by Aubrey Powell for Hipgnosis, and is featured in the vinyl edition’s booklet.

Pre-order “Wet Dream” at the Rhino website; and listen to “Cat Cruise,” the first track streaming, here:
