Pink Floyd has released a new video featuring an early performance of “Grantchester Meadows.”

The video includes film of the band’s Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Rick Wright in a 1970 KQED (San Francisco) performance and new nature footage shot by Aubrey “Po” Powell of Hipgnosis, set to audio from a BBC performance recorded May 12, 1969.

The song comes from the band’s 1969 album “Ummagumma.”

The video is the first taste of the rarities coming our way when the group releases ‘The Early Years 1965-1972″ boxset Nov. 11.

Pink Floyd exhibit to open in 2017

Posted August 31, 2016 by Floydian Slip

Nick Mason announcing Their Mortal Remains outside the Victoria & Albert Museum, London

“Their Mortal Remains,” a long-delayed exhibition devoted to Pink Floyd, will finally open in London next year.

Containing more than 350 items, promoters describe the show as an “immersive, multi-sensory and theatrical journey” through the 50-year history of the band.

Running May 13 to Oct. 1, 2017, at the Victoria & Albert Museum, the show coincides with the 50th anniversary of Floyd’s debut 45 “Arnold Layne,” released in March 1967.

Drummer Nick Mason joined a flying pig outside the venue to announce the event today.

Admission ranges from £11 to £57. Tickets can be purchased online.

The exhibition was originally to open in Milan in September 2014. But Evolve Devolve, the Italian promoter of the event, issued a statement a month before launch saying the complexity of the installation made it impossible for the company to meet the timeline.

The London event, promoted by Michael Cohl and Iconic Entertainment Studios, has the involvement of all surviving members of the Floyd.

Learn more about the event at the V&A site.

Thanks to Facebook’s TwentyThree DrumHead for the heads-up.

David Gilmour 1986 performance coming to DVD/CD

Posted August 4, 2016 by Floydian Slip

A 1986 show that was part of David Gilmour‘s stint with Pete Townshend‘s Deep End band is about to be released.

“Face to Face” will be a two-disc DVD/CD set of the band’s appearance on German TV’s “Rockpalast” program. The performance was recorded at Marché International du Disque et de l’Edition Musicale (MIDEM) in Cannes on Jan. 29, 1986.

The discs will be released Sept. 16. The package will also be available digitally.

In addition to Townshend solo songs and classics from The Who, the band performs Gilmour’s “Blue Light” from his ’84 “About Face” album.

The band includes: Townshend (vocals, guitar); Gilmour (guitar, vocals); Peter Hope-Evans (harmonica); Chucho Merchan (bass); Simon Phillips (drums); John Rabbit Bundrick (keyboards); Jody Linscott (percussion); The Kick Horns: Simon Clarke, Roddy Lorimer, Tim Sanders, Pete Beachill and Dave Plews; and backing vocalists Billy Nicholls, Ian Ellis, Chris Staines, Gina Foster and Coral Gordan.

“Blue Light” will appear on the DVD and the CD.

Thanks to Ian Schulze for the heads-up.

David Gilmour made honorary Pompeii citizen

Posted July 7, 2016 by Floydian Slip

David Gilmour has been made an honorary citizen of the Italian city of Pompeii.

The honor was bestowed upon him yesterday by the city’s mayor, Ferdinando Uliano.

“Thanks to everyone,” Gilmour said. “Here in Pompeii I feel safe, as if I was at home.”

Gilmour is set to play two shows tonight and tomorrow at the ancient amphitheater where Pink Floyd shot its live concert film in 1971.

Roger Waters signs BMG publishing deal

Posted June 29, 2016 by Floydian Slip

Roger Waters has signed a publishing deal with BMG to represent his catalogue of Pink Floyd songs.

As a main songwriter with Floyd, many of the band’s most popular (i.e. profitable) songs fall under Waters’ jurisdiction: “Money,” “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” “Another Brick in the Wall, Part II” and “Comfortably Numb,” to name a few.

“We are honored that Roger Waters has chosen BMG, the youngest of the big international music companies, to represent his legendary and exquisite catalog,” says BMG CEO Hartwig Masuch. “To win the endorsement and trust of one of the world’s most successful songwriters is a significant milestone less than eight years after our launch.”

Waters added, “October last year I put on a gig called Music Heals with some wounded veterans in Washington D.C. BMG supported us. I’m very glad to be back in the same team.”

Waters’ Floyd catalogue was previously administered by Warner/Chappell.

Who is Jimmy Smith?

Posted June 24, 2016 by Floydian Slip

One fan who ponied up $500 for the so-called “super deluxe” boxset of “Roger Waters The Wall” got a surprise: Instead of being autographed by Waters, the 170-page hardcover book included with fan Jim Clarke‘s box reads “Love Jimmy Smith.”

Fans have put forth two theories to explain the anomaly: Either Waters grew tired of signing all 3,000 boxes and decided to play a prank. Or someone else was hired to sign on Waters’ behalf and experienced a momentary lapse of reason when he accidentally signed his own name.

Music publication NME has asked Waters’ camp for comment, but none are forthcoming just yet.

Either way, in the end, this botched box might end up being worth even more than if Waters had signed his own name to it.

Surrogate band indeed.
