New Roger Waters album tracklist; release delayed

Posted April 20, 2017 by Floydian Slip

The release date for “Is This the Life We Really Want?,” the new album from Roger Waters, has been delayed by two weeks. Originally scheduled for May 19, Columbia Records will now release it globally on Friday, June 2.

Pre-orders for the album begin tomorrow in three formats: double 180-gram vinyl LP in a gatefold jacket, four-panel soft pack CD, and digital.

A Columbia press release describes the album as “an unflinching commentary on the modern world and uncertain times” and “a natural successor to classic Pink Floyd albums such as ‘Animals’ and ‘The Wall.'”

It’s produced and mixed by Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Paul McCartney, Beck, U2).

Tracklist for the album is as follows:

  1. When We Were Young
  2. Déjà Vu
  3. The Last Refugee
  4. Picture That
  5. Broken Bones
  6. Is This the Life We Really Want?
  7. Bird in a Gale
  8. The Most Beautiful Girl
  9. Smell the Roses
  10. Wait for Her
  11. Oceans Apart
  12. Part of Me Died

Lyrics for “Wait for Her” were written by Waters and inspired by an English translation by an unknown author of “Lesson from the Kama Sutra (Wait for Her)” by Mahmoud Darwish.

Musicians on “Is This the Life We Really Want?” are: Waters (vocals, acoustic, bass), Godrich (arrangement, sound collages, keyboards, guitar), Gus Seyffert (bass, guitar, keyboards), Jonathan Wilson (guitar, keyboards), Joey Waronker (drums), Roger Manning (keyboards), Lee Pardini (keyboards), and Lucius (vocals) with Jessica Wolfe and Holly Proctor.

Waters will launch his North American “Us + Them” tour in Kansas City, MO, on Friday, May 26. The tour runs through Oct. 28, finishing in Vancouver, BC.

See the Roger Waters website for complete and up-to-date concert dates.

Post-performance report: “Another Brick in the Wall” opera

Posted March 12, 2017 by Floydian Slip

Last night in Montreal, “Floydian Slip” attended the premiere of “Another Brick in the Wall,” a new opera based on Pink Floyd’s “The Wall.”

The crowd outside the entrance of Place Des Arts‘ Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier theater grew steadily as we approached the 7:30 curtain time. Two or three television camera crews were there reporting on-scene, likely adding to the crowd as passers-by stopped to see what the commotion was.

Roger Waters arrived about 15 minutes before the performance and posed for photos with other production personnel on the red carpet. Inside, Waters sat in the center of the audience, receiving a standing ovation when we was acknowledged from the stage during pre-show announcements.

We enjoyed the show, and imagine other Floyd fans — opera beginners, like us, or otherwise — would, too.

The show runs through March 27.

Original “Wall” paintings for sale

Posted March 9, 2017 by Floydian Slip

Original paintings by Gerald Scarfe used for the 1982 film “Pink Floyd The Wall” are on sale.

San Francisco Art Exchange (SFAE) is selling several items from Scarfe’s private collection.

Standouts include “The Scream,” used on the film poster and billboards; and a massive 8-foot storyboard from the film.

Have we piqued your interest? Good. Now here’s a reality check: Prices in the collection range from $46,500 to $1.85 million US, with an average price of $769,000. Those prices don’t include copyright or reproduction rights.

Well, we can dream.

Regardless of the prices, SFAE reports interest in the sale is huge, with, at one point, 100 requests for the catalog pouring in each hour.

Scarfe joined us on “Floydian Slip” in November 2010. He was one of the friendliest and most engaging guests we’ve had on the show. You can hear and read that interview on our website.

SFAE will host a major exhibit featuring the works in July.
