David Gilmour music included with upcoming Peter Green book

Posted April 28, 2021 by Floydian Slip

In October, Rufus Publications will publish “Peter Green — The Albatross Man,” which will include a new recording featuring David Gilmour.

The recording is a new version of “Need Your Love So Bad,” which includes a recently-discovered vocal recorded by Green in his mother’s attic in the 1960s. Gilmour recently contributed guitar to the track.

Green co-founded Fleetwood Mac in 1967 and left the band in Spring ’70 after a period of mental decline exacerbated by his use of LSD. He died in 2020.

Rufus Publications says for the three years leading up to his passing, he’d been participating in compiling this book, which is devoted to his life and work.

Three versions of the book will be made available: The “ultra-limited edition,” limited to 50 copies, and the “deluxe” edition, limited to 500, will include the music on vinyl and CD. The third edition will not.

Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett is featured on the second song in the new release: a new version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Man of the World.”

Gilmour and Hammett both participated in the February 2020 Peter Green tribute concert, organized by drummer Mick Fleetwood.

Pre-order “Peter Green — The Albatross Man” now.

“Theatre for Dreamers” paperback ships with Gilmour CD

Posted March 25, 2021 by Floydian Slip

The paperback of Polly Samson‘s “A Theatre for Dreamers” will ship with a bonus CD containing four new tracks from husband David Gilmour.

Bloomsbury will publish the paperback version of the Pink Floyd lyricist’s latest novel April 15 in the U.K. and May 7 in the U.S.

The bonus CD contains four tracks written by Samson and Gilmour, inspired by the book:

  1. Yes, I Have Ghosts
  2. Tell the Truth
  3. Astral Dust
  4. Kokineli

The couple’s daughter, Romany Gilmour, is featured on the songs.

“Yes, I Have Ghosts” first appeared on the audiobook of “Dreamers” published last summer. The song was released in digital form last July, and as a 45 single for Record Store Day Black Friday last November.

We believe the remaining three songs on the upcoming bonus CD were also previously released on the audiobook, but are awaiting confirmation.

Pre-order the book and CD through Rough Trade in the U.K. or Rough Trade in the U.S.

David Gilmour black Strat retailer Henry Goldrich dead at 88

Posted March 7, 2021 by Floydian Slip

Henry Goldrich, the purveyor of Manny’s Music in Manhattan where David Gilmour bought his famed black Stratocaster in 1970, has died. He passed away Feb. 16 at his home in Boca Raton, Fla., at the age of 88.

Gilmour played the black Strat on many epic Floyd recordings for decades before selling it at auction in 2019 for $3.98 million. (He donated the proceeds to charity.)

Goldrich is also credited with introducing the wah-wah peddle to Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton.

Other artists he served included Pete Townshend, James Taylor, John Sebastian and Sting.

Manny’s closed in 2009 after 74 years of business.

David Gilmour has partnered with C.F. Martin & Co. Inc. to create two signature edition guitars to benefit the David Gilmour Charitable Foundation.

The Martin D-35 David Gilmour is a nod to the guitar Gilmour purchased used outside Manny’s Music Shop in New York City in the early-’70s. His primary acoustic for more than 40 years, the instrument fetched $1.2 million as part of a charitable auction of his guitars in 2019.

The 6- and 12-string versions sell for $5,499.

David Gilmour‘s single “Yes, I Have Ghosts” will be issued on vinyl in November.

The song, originally included on the audiobook of wife Polly Samson‘s novel “A Theatre for Dreamers,” will be released as a 7″ limited edition for Record Store Day Black Friday, Nov. 27.

New David Gilmour song released as single

Posted July 3, 2020 by Floydian Slip

Legacy/Columbia today released David Gilmour‘s “Yes, I Have Ghosts” as a single.

The new track, written by Gilmour and his wife, Polly Samson, features their daughter, Romany Gilmour, on backing vocals and harp.

“I was working on this song just as we went into lockdown and had to cancel a session with backing singers,” Gilmour said in a statement.

“As it turned out, the solution was right here and I couldn’t be happier with the way Romany’s voice blends with mine and her beautiful harp playing has been another revelation,” he added.

The song was originally released last week as part of the audiobook of Samson’s novel “A Theatre for Dreamers,” and was inspired by one of the characters in the story.

New song coming from David Gilmour

Posted June 12, 2020 by Floydian Slip

The upcoming audiobook of Polly Samson‘s “A Theatre for Dreamers” will include the song “Yes I have Ghosts,” a new single from husband David Gilmour.

Gilmour has been writing with Samson since Pink Floyd’s “The Division Bell” (1994). He provides original incidental music throughout the audiobook.

The single is inspired by a character in the book, set on the Greek island of Hydra, and was co-written by Samson.

“We didn’t set out to work together on the audiobook, but lockdown meant I had to narrate and I’m grateful to David Gilmour for stepping in to the producer’s chair,” says Samson “We wanted to explore the creative possibilities of the format and produce something new, refreshing and innovative.”

Publisher W.F. Howes Ltd. lists the release date of the audiobook as Sept. 1.

Uncut and Prog magazines have both published a date of June 25, though it’s unclear whether that’s the release date for the audiobook or the stand-alone single.

Roger Waters calls for access to Pink Floyd social media

Posted May 19, 2020 by Floydian Slip

In a video posted to Facebook today, Pink Floyd co-founder Roger Waters makes a case for equal access to the websites and social media accounts operated under the Floyd name.

During the 5-minute video, Waters thanks fans for their comments and enthusiasm for a new video of “Mother” he recorded Zoom-style with a number of backing musicians and posted online Sunday.

He explains none of his work outside of Pink Floyd, which he left in the mid-’80s, is promoted through the official Floyd channels online, since “David (Gilmour) thinks he owns it.”

Waters goes on to point out Gilmour has tied promotional efforts for his wife and writing partner Polly Samson‘s new novel to the band’s social media.

“This is wrong. We should rise up,” he says, “or just change the name of the band to Spinal Tap.”

Waters has postponed to 2021 his “This is Not a Drill” North American tour, which was originally scheduled to open July 8.
