Division Bell boxset coming June 30

Posted May 20, 2014 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd will release a boxset edition of its 1994 album “The Division Bell” to commemorate the album’s 20th anniversary.

It’s scheduled for release June 30.

The boxset will feature a new 2-LP vinyl edition of the album, remastered by Doug Sax at The Mastering Lab from the original analogue tapes, including all the full length tracks (originally edited to fit on a single LP) in a gatefold sleeve designed by Hipgnosis/StormStudios.

Five other discs are included: a red 7-inch vinyl replica of the single “Take It Back,” a clear 7-inch vinyl replica of “High Hopes,” 12-inch blue vinyl replica of “High Hopes” with reverse laser etched design, the 2011 Discovery remaster of “The Division Bell,” and a Blu-ray disc including “The Division Bell” in HD Audio, plus the previously unreleased 5.1 surround sound audio mix of the album by longtime Floyd engineer Andy Jackson.

Another addition included on the Blu-ray disc is a new video for the Grammy award-winning instrumental “Marooned.” Filmed in Ukraine during the first week of April 2014, the video was directed by Aubrey Powell of Hipgnosis. It’ll appear on the disc with audio tracks in PCM Stereo and a 5.1 mix by Jackson.

“The Division Bell’ debuted at #1 in the U.K. and in the USA, staying at the top of the U.S. charts for four weeks. It also went to #1 in eight other countries and, to date, has reached total album sales of more than 12 million. The album was recorded by the band at Astoria and Britannia Row Studios with the majority of the lyrics being written by David Gilmour and his wife, Polly Samson.

Gilmour said at the time: “The three of us went into Britannia Row studios, and improvised for two weeks.  Playing together and starting from scratch was interesting and exciting, it kick started the album and the process was very good, it was collaborative and felt more cohesive.”

Bob Ezrin and Gilmour produced the original album, with orchestral arrangements by the late Michael Kamen. The anniversary box set discs have been remastered by long term Pink Floyd audio associates James Guthrie and Joel Plante.

Lost Syd Barrett recording to be released

Posted January 10, 2014 by Floydian Slip

Easy Action plans to release one of the last known live performances of Pink Floyd co-founder Syd Barrett.

The label’s managing director, Carlton Sandercock, tells “Floydian Slip,” “We have indeed purchased and are preparing to release a live set by The Last Minute Put Together Boogie Band featuring Bruce Pain, Jack Monk and Twink. Guesting is Fred Frith and, on two maybe three songs, Syd Barrett.

“The music played in this set is a million miles away from anything Pink Floyd have ever done,” he adds.

The performance was recorded Jan. 27, 1972, at the Corn Exchange in Cambridge, England.

The set list is as follows:

  1. Sea Cruise
  2. L.A. to London Boogie
  3. ICE
  4. Nadine
  5. Drinkin’ That Wine
  6. Number Nine (Gotta Be Reason)
  7. Let’s Roll
  8. Sweet Little Angel

Auction house Bonhams put up for bid a reel tape of the show in June 2010. Expecting to fetch $5,000, the item didn’t meet its reserve price and was later sold to Easy Action. (See “Rare Syd Barrett recording up for auction” and “Rare Barrett recording goes unsold“)

The label plans to release the recording, possibly as a vinyl-only release to being with, in March.

Reports: David Gilmour recording

Posted November 22, 2013 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour is said to be working on a new recording project.

The news was seemingly leaked by Graham Nash (Crosby Stills Nash, The Hollies) on an appearance on vintage.tv’s “Needle Time” program last week.

Nash mentioned to host Neil McCormick that he and David Crosby were “taking the train to Brighton to go and sing with David Gilmour on his new record.”

Nash and Crosby provided some backing vocals on Gilmour’s previous studio album, “On an Island” (2006).

“Floydian Slip” turned to long-time Floyd sound engineer Andy Jackson who would certainly be working on such a project, if it was underway, for comment. He would neither confirm nor deny the project, but added, “Things are afoot, and more than you might expect.”

Gilmour’s former bandmate, Roger Waters, recently off his three-year world tour of “The Wall,” told Rolling Stone recently he’s completed a 55-minute demo of a new solo album.

“Amused to Death” to be reissued as SACD, LP

Posted January 18, 2013 by Floydian Slip

Acoustic Sounds Inc. will reissue Roger Waters’s 1992 album “Amused to Death” on LP and Super Audio CD (SACD) this fall.

James Guthrie, who mixed the original album, will use the original analog tapes to master the album for SACD. Doug Sax, who mastered the original, will join him in prepping the LP.

“Amused To Death” was originally mixed using QSound, a virtual surround sound, to enhance the spatial feel of the album’s music and sound effects. The reissue will preserve QSound’s three-dimensional experience.

The LP will be pressed onto a 200-gram vinyl double disc. The SACD will be a stereo hybrid, meaning it can be played on a standard CD player, albeit without the added benefits of the SACD technology.

Acoustic Sounds has set an Oct. 15 release date, but emphasizes the date is tentative.

The LP will be priced at $49.98. The SACD at $30.
