New Andy Jackson album coming this fall

Posted August 11, 2014 by Floydian Slip

Esoteric Antenna will release “Signal to Noise,” a new album by long-time Pink Floyd recording engineer Andy Jackson, on Nov. 3.

The 7-track album will be available as a single CD and as a limited edition 2-disc digipack with 5.1 Surround Sound mix.

The label describes the album as “a fine, modern, progressive work, which draws on Andy Jackson’s exemplary work as an engineer and producer.”

Besides being an allusion to Jackson’s sound engineering background, the title refers to many of the lyrical themes of the album. “The album reflects on the sorting of what is important in life from the humdrum of everyday existence,” he explains, “and is in itself an analogy for the process of the creation of the album.”

The songlist will be:

  1. The Boy in the Forest
  2. One More Push
  3. Invisible Colours
  4. Spray Paint
  5. Herman at the Fountain
  6. It All Came Crashing Down
  7. Brownian Motion

Jackson’s tenure with Floyd and its members includes work on “The Wall” film, “The Final Cut,” “A Momentary Lapse of Reason,” “The Division Bell,” “Pulse,” Roger Waters‘ “The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking,” David Gilmour‘s “About Face,” “On An Island,” and “Live in Gdansk,” as well as the upcoming Floyd album “The Endless River.”

His work’s earned him two Grammy nominations and Mix magazine’s award for best live sound engineer for the “Pulse” tour.

Esoteric Antenna is a division of Cherry Red Records of London.

Details: Lost Dream Academy cuts featuring David Gilmour

Posted August 1, 2014 by Floydian Slip

Our copy of the new Dream Academy compilation arrived today. Its liner notes reveal some more details about David Gilmour‘s participation in the previously-unreleased tracks included on the album.

Band frontman Nick Laird-Clowes writes of “Living in a War”: “Another song taken from the third album sessions. It had started life with a simple acoustic/string synthesizer arrangement, but had developed in the studio under the influence of the technology and sounds of the time, including David Gilmour’s multi-octave guitar sound (circa 1989). It was then thought to be ‘too eighties’ and subsequently put on the shelf but emerges now as a pure sound snapshot of its time.”

For the other track featuring Gilmour, “The Chosen Few,” Laird-Clowes writes: “Recorded in sessions for the last album. One afternoon in a break from his ‘A Momentary Lapse of Reason’ Tour, David came down to the Strongroom where we were recording with Anthony Moore and added some electric and slide guitar to the track. With Pete Thomas playing the drums, Guy Pratt and Jon Carin augmenting our sound with the Hammond organ, there was very much a ‘live band’ feel to this recording.”

Careful observers will recognize some of those names as those of other Floyd contributors. (Laird-Clowes co-wrote a couple tracks on Floyd’s “The Division Bell” [1994].)

“Living in a War” and “The Chosen Few” are pretty much as one might expect, and as described above. Unfortunately, for Floyd fans, Gilmour’s contributions rarely rise to the top of the mix in either track.

Correction: “Endless River” won’t include David Crosby, Graham Nash

Posted July 12, 2014 by Floydian Slip

Ultimate Classic Rock has retracted its story from a few days ago, stating David Crosby and Graham Nash will appear on the upcoming Pink Floyd album.

The source cites the Brain Damage website saying the duo’s work will, instead, appear on an upcoming David Gilmour solo album.

Two upcoming Floyd-related projects. Even better. 😉

“Endless River” to feature David Crosby, Graham Nash

Posted July 10, 2014 by Floydian Slip

Note: This story has been corrected. Read the correction.

Ultimate Classic Rock reports “The Endless River,” the new Pink Floyd album coming this fall, will include vocals by David Crosby and Graham Nash.

“We went down to sing on this particular song that he wrote about friends that had died,” Nash told VH-1 Radio Network’s Dave Basner. “It’s a beautiful song, too — beautiful.”

Nash was the first to leak news of a new Floyd project, when he mentioned during a TV appearance last November he was heading over to Gilmour’s studio to lay down some tracks. The project was presumed to be a Gilmour solo album, but apparently was “The Endless River.”

Crosby and Nash sang background on the title track of Gilmour’s “On an Island” (2006).

Reports: New Pink Floyd album coming this fall

Posted July 5, 2014 by Floydian Slip

Two individuals close to the Pink Floyd camp are posting to social media that a new Pink Floyd album will be released in October.

Polly Samson, wife of Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and his writing partner for the past couple decades, tweeted today: “Btw Pink Floyd album out in October is called ‘The Endless River.’ Based on 1994 sessions is Rick Wright’s swansong and very beautiful.”

Vocalist Durga McBroom-Hudson, who’s toured with Floyd and Gilmour, posted a photo previously posted to Instagram by Samson (“Photo may show David Gilmour working on new album”), with the caption, “During a session recording the NEW PINK FLOYD ALBUM!!”

More details as they’re available.

Syd Barrett catalog to be reissued on vinyl

Posted June 28, 2014 by Floydian Slip

Rhino Records and Parlophone will reissue Syd Barrett‘s three solo albums on heavy-weight vinyl this summer.

The companies will offer “The Madcap Laughs” (1970), “Barrett” (1970) and “Opel” (1988) as 180-gram LPs, sporting the original yellow and green Harvest label.

The records will drop June 30 in the U.K., and arrive in the U.S. July 8.

Barrett released “The Madcap Laughs” and “Barrett” both in 1970, shortly after departing Pink Floyd. Floyd’s David Gilmour and Roger Waters helped produce the material, with Gilmour and Rick Wright appearing on the recordings.

“Opel” is a collection of alternate takes released long after Barrett became reclusive.

Marianne Faithfull album to feature Roger Waters music

Posted May 23, 2014 by Floydian Slip

The upcoming album by Marianne Faithfull will include music written by Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters.

NME reports “Give My Love to London,” scheduled for release in September, will also include contributions from Pat Leonard — we’re presuming the same artist who’s worked with Floyd (“A Momentary Lapse of Reason” [1987]) and Waters (“Amused to Death” [1992] ).

Waters contributed “Incarceration of a Flower Child” to Faithfull’s “Vagabond Ways” album in 1999, and played on the track. He’d written the song in the late-’60s — supposedly about fallen bandmate Syd Barrett — but never recorded it himself or with Floyd.

NME says “Give My Love to London” will include music written by Waters and other artists, and lyrics by Faithfull.
