Hey, Ayatollah! Leave those kids alone!

Canadian world rockers Blurred Vision have released a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall,” with a modern twist.

The group changed a couple of choice lyrics to send a message of solidarity to youth fighting for their freedom in Iran.

The video, directed by Iranian filmmaker Babak Payami, who splits his time between Tehran and Toronto, is racking up the views on YouTube — nearly 70,000 at this writing.

According to the band’s Web site, the single should be available for download on iTunes soon.

Syd Barrett on Mojo cover

Floyd’s first frontman, Syd Barrett, is on the cover of the latest issue of Mojo magazine.

Mojo celebrates the 40th anniversary of Barrett’s “The Madcap Laughs” album with a cover story featuring Floyd’s David Gilmour, Robert Wyatt (Soft Machine), Floyd designer Storm Thorgerson, photographer Mick Rock and others.

The CD included with the issue is a re-recording of “Madcap” by  Hawkwind, Marc Almond, R.E.M., Robyn Hitchcock and others.

(Kinda) new Comfortably Numb cover

Prog-jazz trio The Bad Plus has included a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Comfortably Numb” on the group’s album “For All I Care.”

The recording includes Minneapolis alt-rock vocalist Wendy Lewis (The Plus).

The album also includes covers of other classic cuts by Yes (“Long Distance Runaround”), the Bee Gees (“How Deep Is Your Love”) and Heart (“Barracuda”).

“For All I Care” was released 11 months ago, Feb. 3, 2009 — but if you’re like us, it’s new to you.

Swedish duo covers “Julia Dream”

Fruits de Mer Records has released a re-recording of Pink Floyd’s 1968 single “Julia Dream” by Swedish duo Us and Them.

The song, a medley of the Floyd number written by Roger Waters and the traditional nursery rhyme “All the Pretty Horses,” appears on a limited edition 7-inch vinyl EP along with two other covers: “Dialogue,” originally by Jackson C. Frank, and “Home to Stay,” first recorded by Tudor Lodge.

The “ice”-colored record plays at 33.3 RPM and comes enclosed in an 8-page full-color booklet containing lyrics.

This is the eighth release from the Surrey-based Fruits de Mer Records, which boasts it “loses money on every release and we love it.” The company, in business for 18 months, has previously released re-recordings of songs originally by Small Faces, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Nick Drake, Caravan, Kraftwerk, Van der Graaf Generator, Nico and others.

This latest release is available for $8 (£5) directly from the label: www.fruitsdemerrecords.com, or at a handful of U.K.-based retailers: Piccadilly Records, Norman Records, Heyday Mail Order and Rough Trade.

Flaming Lips’ “Dark Side” available for pre-order

The Flaming Lips‘ cover of Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon” is available for pre-order at the iTunes Store. The album will be released Dec. 22 on iTunes, and at other download sites at a later date.

The 10-track album costs $9.99. None of the tracks is available for purchase alone.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason cooks

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason offers up his recipe for bouillabaisse in a new charity cookbook.

“A Salute to Cooking” from Bene Factum Publishing Ltd. benefits the Royal Hospital Chelsea‘s Chelsea Pensioners’ Appeal fund.

Mason is one of many celebrities who contributed more than 100 recipes for the book.

Illustrator Gerald Scarfe, best-known to Floyd fans for his work on Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” album and film, illustrated the book’s cover.

Founded in 1702, Royal Chelsea Hospital is home to 300 aging or disabled veterans who served in the British Army.

Pink Floyd graphic novel coming in 2010

Bluewater Productions of Vancouver, Wash., will publish “The Pink Floyd Experience,” a Pink Floyd-themed graphic novel, in 2010.

The title, the sixth in Bluewater’s 10-volume series, is a repackaging of five Rock ‘n Roll Comics originally published by Revolutionary Comics in the 1990s.

The entire series documents the biographies of more than 70 bands and solo artists. It begins with Vol. 1 “The Beatles,” and will be published bi-monthly.

The original Rock ‘n Roll Comics series ran from 1989 to 1994. Average circulation for each issue was more than 50,000.

Each volume of the Bluewater publication will cost $17.99.

Book of classic rock art features Pink Floyd

Goodman Books has published “The Art of Classic Rock,” a coffee table book by Paul Grushkin and Rob Roth.

The 256-page (5½-pound!) hardcover tome is a visual document of Roth’s 35-year collection of rock tour and advertising posters, merchandise, memorabilia and other artwork.

The book focuses on eight bands. The second chapter — 34 pages — is devoted to Pink Floyd.

Beautifully photographed and designed, the majority of the space on each page is filled with large, color reproductions of band memorabilia, with Grushkin’s narrative filling the spaces inbetween.

Grushkin is a leading rock historian and author of five books. Roth is a Tony-nominated Broadway director.

Vintage Floyd album becomes vintage wine

Wines That Rock has started selling a “Dark Side of the Moon”-branded wine.

The wine, a 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon, is available for purchase at the company’s Web site and will be in stores in 2010.

“Cabernet Sauvignon reflects the hauntingly dense, timeless character of Pink Floyd‘s masterpiece album,” the company says.

The “Dark Side” vintage is the first of three rock-inspired wines the company has made. The others are the Rolling Stones “Forty Licks Merlot” and a “Woodstock Chardonnay.”

The Floyd variety comes in 3-, 6- and 12-bottle packs for $50.97, $101.94, and $203.88, respectively.

Wines That Rock was founded by Ron Roy and is a partnership between rock management company RZO and the Mendocino Wine Co.

Classic Rock to publish Floyd 3D cover

U.K. magazine Classic Rock will mark the 30th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s “The Wall” when it features the album on a special 3D cover later this month.

“The 30th anniversary of ‘The Wall’ is a major milestone in the history of Pink Floyd and the lives of our readers, so it was only right to celebrate with a cover as mind expanding as their music,” says publisher Chris Ingham.

The cover will features a number of Floydian images such as a flying pig, marching hammers and pyramid. Classic Rock says the cover will be the first high-definition 3D magazine cover published in the U.K.

The issue will include an eight-page article about the album, including previously unpublished behind-the-scenes photos from the making of the 1982 film, “Pink Floyd The Wall.”

The issue will be available Nov. 11 in the U.K., and Dec. 9 in the United States, at stores such as Barnes and Nobles and Borders.
