Pink Floyd catalog to be reissued on vinyl

Posted May 6, 2016 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd will begin reissuing its catalog on vinyl this spring.

The first of the series of remastered LPs will arrive June 3 on the group’s new Pink Floyd Records label, a division of Columbia: “The Piper at the Gates of Dawn” (1967), “A Saucerful of Secrets” (1968), “More” (1969) and “Ummagumma” (1969).

The albums will be pressed on 180-gram vinyl and feature packaging that imitates the original releases.

Floyd plans to release more LPs from its catalog throughout the year. It’ll be the first time in more than 20 years the complete Floyd catalog will be available on vinyl.

The first batch have been mastered by long-time Floyd collaborators James Guthrie and Joel Plante; and Bernie Grundman, who’s mastered Michael Jackson‘s “Thriller,” Prince‘s “Purple Rain,” Dr. Dre‘s “The Chronic” and others.

Syd Barrett on cover of Mojo

Posted April 25, 2016 by Floydian Slip

Syd Barrett is on the cover of the new Mojo magazine, hitting U.K. newsstands tomorrow.

The magazine devotes 19 pages to the late Pink Floyd co-founder and the band’s early years.

Included are two high-quality Floyd poster reproductions on heavy, coated stock; and a 14-track CD of “modern psychedelia” housed in a sleeve that harkens back to Floyd’s “Arnold Layne” single.

We’ll be giving away some copies on an upcoming “Floydian Slip.”

Early Pink Floyd recordings released

Posted November 30, 2015 by Floydian Slip

A handful of very early Pink Floyd recordings had their first official release Friday as “Pink Floyd 1965: Their First Recordings.” The limited edition vinyl set was sold during Record Store Day in the United Kingdom.

At least two of the recordings had been floating around as bootlegs since the ’60s — “Lucy Leave” and “I’m a King Bee” — but most fans were familiar with the others by title only.

The double-7-inch vinyl set contains a total of four Syd Barrett numbers, one by Roger Waters and a cover of a Slim Harpo song:

  1. Lucy Leave
    02:53 (Barrett)
  2. Double O Bo
    03:25 (Barrett)
  3. Remember Me
    02:45 (Barrett)
  4. Walk With Me Sydney
    03:11 (Waters)
  5. Butterfly
    02:59 (Barrett)
  6. I’m a King Bee
    03:07 (Harpo)

The lineup on the recordings consists of Roger Waters, bass and vocals; Nick Mason, drums; Rado Klose, guitar; Richard Wright, keyboards; and Syd Barrett, guitar and vocals.

The Waters composition, “Walk With Me Sydney,” features vocals by Juliette Gale, wife of keyboardist Rick Wright.

Though the limited edition of approximately 1,000 sets was distributed in the U.K. only, the band’s Facebook page says the band hopes to make the tracks available “in some physical form towards the end of next year (2016).”

Roger Waters: New album coming in 2016

Posted November 14, 2015 by Floydian Slip

Roger Waters has told Digital Spy he’ll release a new studio album in 2016 and follow it with a tour.

He’s said he’s working on a “radio play” about a boy and his grandfather in Northern Ireland.

“I’m in the middle of making it now,” he says. “It addresses this basic question: Why are we killing the children?

“There’s two characters in it: a grandfather and a grandchild and they together try to find answers to this question, by wandering around.”

Some of the songs were written by Waters as many as 15 years ago.

As for the tour, Waters says he’s looking to perform a “full arena tour,” partly to generate revenue lost to piracy. “Particularly now that you can’t own a record — people just steal it the minute it’s out. They steal it and that’s the end of it,” he says.

“The only way to make a few quid would be to go out on the road and get bums on seat, because they can’t steal that!”
