This summer David Gilmour will return to play the Pompeii amphitheater, 45 years after Pink Floyd performed there while shooting Adrian Maben‘s “Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii.”
Gilmour will perform July 7 and 8 as part of his “Rattle That Lock” tour.
“I want to thank the Ministry of Culture for giving me the opportunity to once again play this beautiful and historic venue,” Gilmour says. “Performing there in 1971 was very special and I’m looking forward to returning and hopefully creating some more memorable moments made even more special by playing to an audience.”
Floyd was the first to play the ancient city of Pompeii, filming over four days in October 1971. No other artist has performed there since. The film showed the band performing without an audience, though the group’s set-list mimicked those of its other live shows at the time.
This time around, there’ll be more than just a film crew watching.
Tickets go on sale at 1 p.m. CET March 22 at www.davidgilmour.com for €300 plus a 15 percent booking fee.
Buyers are limited to two tickets per show.
Pompeii’s amphitheater, built around 80 BC, is the oldest surviving Roman amphitheater. It was buried along with the rest of the city by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Opéra de Montréal will premiere an opera based on Pink Floyd‘s “The Wall” next year. The album’s auteur and Floyd co-founder Roger Waters is collaborating on the project.
Baritone Étienne Dupuis will star as Pink. Music for the production was written by Julien Bilodeau, and Waters is handling the libretto. Alain Trudel will conduct the Orchestre Métropolitain.
Waters initially declined to participate, but changed his mind after hearing the score. “I sat there not expecting to be moved, and I was moved,” he says. “Very moved. So I approach this project with great enthusiasm.”
Waters is no stranger to opera. He spent a great deal of the 1990s writing “Ça Ira” with Étienne and Nadine Roda-Gil.
The opera’s premiering in Montreal is apropos: Waters got the idea for “The Wall” after growing frustrated with a rowdy audience and spitting on a fan during a Floyd show at Montreal’s Olympic Stadium in 1977.
“Another Brick in the Wall: The Opera” will open March 11, 2017.
The company has already released its version of “Another Brick in the Wall Part II”:

It’s the morning after last night’s one-time screening of “Roger Waters The Wall” in select theaters.
Waters’ concert film of his recent world tour incorporates behind-the-scenes footage and additional scenes of Waters trekking across the European countryside in a style that straddles narrative and documentary styles.
