Pig to again fly over Battersea

Posted September 22, 2011 by Floydian Slip

EMI will recreate Pink Floyd‘s celebrated “Animals” cover on Monday, when the record label flies an inflatable pig over the Battersea Power Station in South London.

The stunt kicks off  the label’s Why Pink Floyd? remaster campaign. EMI is reissuing all of the band’s 14 studio albums Monday (Tuesday in the U.S.), as well as releasing “Experience” and “Immersion” multi-disc editions of “The Dark Side of the Moon.” Expanded versions of “Wish You Were Here” and “The Wall” will follow in November and February, respectively.

The PVC replica — “Algie,” the original swine, was determined unfit for flight — was created by Germany’s Air Artists, which has created all Floyd inflatables since 1976.

All of this weather permitting, of course.

Gilmour joins Waters tonight

Posted May 12, 2011 by Floydian Slip

The nearly-year-long mystery was revealed on David Gilmour’s blog moments ago: When would he make good on his promise from last summer to join Roger Waters on stage to perform “Comfortably Numb” with former bandmate Roger Waters?

The answer: At tonight’s o2 show in London.

Gilmour’s post says the song will be recorded for posting on “various websites,” but is not intended for an eventual DVD of “The Wall” in the works.

“Look on the bright side: that means you’ll get to see it sooner,” the post reads, before adding tonight’s appearance truly is a one-off.

“David is not repeating his special guest performance at a later occasion, I’m sorry to disappoint those of you with fingers crossed and tickets for later shows.”

Waters joined Gilmour on stage at a charity event last July (“David Gilmour, Roger Waters perform together“). The deal, as it was revealed later, was Gilmour agreed to, in turn, join Waters during one show of his “Wall” tour, to perform “Comfortably Numb.”

“Floydian Slip” turned the upcoming pairing into a contest (“Reunion date contest: The results“), asking people to guess the date of the reunion for a chance to win Waters’ “The Wall Live in Berlin” from 1990. Guess the exact date, and we’d throw in a sealed copy of Classic Rock‘s excellent 3D Pink Floyd issue from Fall 2009, celebrating the 30th anniversary of “The Wall.”

We’ll be mulling over entries this evening to determine our winner.

Greek ‘Wall’ shows to be filmed; Milan dates moved

Posted April 20, 2011 by Floydian Slip

“The Wall” will be committed to film when the show is performed by Roger Waters in Greece in early July.

To accommodate the filming, the tour’s Milan, Italy, dates have been rescheduled. The July 6 and 7 shows for Milan have been moved to July 3 and 4, respectively.

Ticket holders are instructed to hold on to their tickets, which will automatically become valid for the new dates. Those who cannot attend the new dates, should return to their point of purchase for a refund no later than June 15.

Waters previously announced the shows in London would be filmed, asking for close attention of the show’s no photography policy, since flash photos interfere with the show’s projections and affect filming.

We’ve been told to expect a possible theatrical release of the show, as well as a DVD.

Roger Waters’ “Conan” appearance online

Posted December 16, 2010 by Floydian Slip

If you missed last night’s “Conan” on TBS, you can watch Conan O’Brien‘s interview with Roger Waters on Waters’ Web site.

The chat seemed a little awkward — maybe bordering on contentious at a couple points.

Anyone else think so?

Early Floyd concert recording found

Posted December 10, 2010 by Floydian Slip

What might be the only surviving complete recording of a Pink Floyd concert from 1967 was recently discovered, according to Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter (News of the Day).

The recording, made at Stockholm’s Golden Circle restaurant/music club on Sept. 10, 1967, reportedly includes the band’s sound-check along with its 50-minute gig.

It’ll be played for the public at two events to be held at the Golden Circle on May 3 and 7, 2011.

A Floyd cover band is scheduled to open the festivities, which include a special menu with dishes named as Floyd puns and specially-designed mannequins standing in for the original band members.

The recording was made by a Swedish recording engineer who, so far, has chosen to remain anonymous, according to Dagens Nyheter, to avoid the inevitable barrage of interest from Floyd fans.
