Roger Waters to appear in theatrical production

Posted November 21, 2012 by Floydian Slip

Roger Waters will take the stage next week playing a different kind of role than usual. The Pink Floyd co-founder will join the cast of Culture Project‘s revival of “The Exonerated,” a play about wrongfully convicted survivors of death row.

Written by Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen, the show’s original production ran for more than 600 performances beginning in October 2002. Featuring a rotating cast of celebrities reading accounts by former death row inmates, the show focuses on the true stories of six people sentenced to death and later freed after being proven innocent.

Waters will share the stage with Kathleen Chalfant, William Marshall and Chris Sarandon.

Founded by Allan Buchman in 1996, Culture Project’s dedicated to addressing human rights issues by shining an artistic spotlight on injustice.

The show plays at 45 Bleecker St. in New York’s East Village Nov. 27 through Dec. 2. (866) 811-4111.

Inductees of the British magazine’s “Roll of Honour” were announced Tuesday at a ceremony at the Roundhouse in London hosted by Duff McKagan (Guns ‘N Roses, Velvet Revolver).

Drummer Nick Mason was on-hand to accept.

“The Story of Wish You Were Here,” a documentary about the band’s 1975 album released on DVD and Blu-ray in June, received the Film/DVD award. The disc was released by Eagle Rock Entertainment.

Well-deserved, both.

Waters’ Quebec Wall to rival Berlin’s

Posted May 23, 2012 by Floydian Slip

Roger Waters has added a new final date to his tour of “The Wall,” which will be more than twice as big as any other show on the tour.

When the former Pink Floyd front-man performs at Quebec City’s Fields of Abraham on July 21, the wall will be more than 800 feet wide, more than twice the size of any other show on his revival tour of the show.

It’ll be the largest outdoor staging of his magnum opus since he performed it at the site of the former Berlin wall in 1990 on the same day: July 21.

Initial sales are reserved for those who’ve purchased admittance to the Festival d’été de Québec.

Festival fans can register online today at InfoFestival.com from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. for a drawing to purchase wristbands for the concert.

Posted January 28, 2012 by Floydian Slip

Roddy Bogawa‘s documentary about Pink Floyd sleeve designer Storm Thorgerson will have its East Coast premiere next month at New York Museum of the Modern Art (MoMA).

The feature-length film, “Taken by Storm,” will be featured as part of MoMA’s two-week-long “International Festival of Nonfiction Film and Media,” beginning Feb. 16.

“Taken by Storm” debuted in March 2011 at the South by Southwest (SxSW) festival.

“Hoping that this screening will give the film a big push along to its distribution life — more screenings, perhaps theatrical release, DVDs and streaming,” Bogawa says.

No Pink Floyd reunion at Olympics

Posted January 4, 2012 by Floydian Slip

Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour refutes a story published by The London Evening Standard yesterday that said surviving members of the band “could” reunite at this year’s Olympics festivities to be held in London.

In what must increasingly seem like a non-paying part-time job, Gilmour released a statement “that there is no truth in recent media speculation about Pink Floyd reuniting to perform for the 2012 London Olympics.”

The Standard had quoted a band “insider” as saying, “It’s long been made clear it would take something very special to get Pink Floyd back together again and it doesn’t get any bigger than the Olympics,” adding, “it’s hoped everything can be confirmed in the coming weeks.”

The most recent reunion of Gilmour, Roger Waters and Nick Mason happened at the end of Waters’s May 12, 2011, performance of “The Wall” when the three joined on stage in London to perform “Outside the Wall” (pictured).

Gilmour had performed on “Comfortably Numb” earlier in that evening’s performance. (See “Video: Gilmour joins Waters at the 02.”)
