I agree. It could be that Conan feels the need to be funny, no matter what. Even when talking with someone as culturally important as Waters about a subject that really isn’t funny.
It was definitely awkward. As much as a genius as Waters is, he has to realize that he is going on Conan and that’s just how Conan is, but yeah, it did make for awkward television.
Considering Mr. Waters’ penchant for perfection I thought it went pretty well. Mr. Waters thinks before he speaks, whereas Mr. O’Brien is ‘off the cuff’. A better interviewer would have been Charlie Rose. Mr. Rose interviewed Mr. Waters in 2005:
