Cambridge orchestra to premiere Pink Floyd-inspired piece

Posted June 30, 2017 by Floydian Slip

The Cambridge Concert Orchestra will premiere a composition by Tim Brooks (pictured) called “Grantchester Variations,” an homage to Syd Barrett and the band he helped found and inspired by Pink Floyd‘s “Grantchester Meadows.”

The piece “will certainly intrigue Pink Floyd fans and lovers of modern orchestral music,” according to orchestra chairman Jan Mentha. “The harmonies and rhythms evoke the early exploratory Floyd works. So far as the orchestra knows, this the only orchestral ‘tribute’ to the iconic band.”

The orchestra will perform the piece as part of its 50th anniversary concert Saturday, July 8 at West Road Concert Hall.

Brooks, of Cambridge, studied music at York University and gained a teaching qualification in music and drama from Leeds University.

More information is available at the orchestra’s website.

Kendall, Kylie Jenner discontinue Pink Floyd T-shirt

Posted June 30, 2017 by Floydian Slip

Kendall and Kylie Jenner have discontinued sale of a T-shirt that misappropriated imagery from Pink Floyd‘s “The Dark Side of the Moon” (1973).

The shirt was one of several designs that featured the women’s faces superimposed across iconic music imagery pinched from Floyd, The Doors, Kiss, Led Zeppelin, Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G., Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne. They sold for $125.

The Jenners added the designs to their online shop Wednesday and removed them Thursday following immediate and harsh criticism.

Ozzy’s wife, Sharon Osbourne, tweeted, “Girls, you haven’t earned the right to put your face with musical icons. Stick to what you know … lip gloss.”

“It’s ironic, at least, and criminal, at worst, both morally, ethically and artistically,” Doors representative Jeff Jampol told Rolling Stone. “They’re obviously attention-seeking missiles who crave celebrity and being well-known but don’t actually do anything.

“It’s the polar opposite of the artists that they’re trampling all over,” he added. “It’s just spitting in the face and on top of art and message and soul and legacy.”

Notorious B.I.G.’s mother, Voletta Wallace, called the shirt featuring her son “disrespectful, disgusting, and exploitation at its worst.”

On matching tweets the Jenner’s posted Thursday, the pair said, “These designs were not well thought out and we deeply apologize to anyone that has been upset and/or offended, especially to the families of the artists.

“We are huge fans of their music and it was not our intention to disrespect these cultural icons in anyway [sic].

“The tee shirts have been pulled from retail and all images have been removed. We will use this as an opportunity to learn from these mistakes and again, we are very sorry.”

Ferrari owned by David Gilmour for sale

Posted June 24, 2017 by Floydian Slip

A 1988 Ferrari F40 Berlinetta first owned by David Gilmour will go on the auction block June 30.

The car, purchased by Gilmour in July 1988, is expected to fetch as much as £1 million at Bonhams’ Goodwood Festival of Speed auction.

Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason purchased a similar model at the same time as Gilmour at the Ferrari factory in Maranello, Italy, after Floyd’s Modena leg of its Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour. The pair are said to have driven them back to the U.K. following their purchase.

List price for the F40 in 1988 was £163,000. Just more than 1,300 were produced.

Though the car can reach a respectable 201 mph, its interior is spartan, sporting a pair of red body contour seats.

The auction takes place at Chichester, Goodwood.

See dozens of photos of the car at the Bohmans website.

“Dark Side” gold record sells for $25k

Posted June 23, 2017 by Floydian Slip

A Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) gold record for Pink Floyd’s “The Dark Side of the Moon” recently sold for $25,000.

The record, signifying $1 million in sales and once owned by Floyd’s Rick Wright, was sold at auction by Nate D. Sanders Auctions in Los Angeles. Minimum bid for the item was $20,000. The winner’s identity was not made public.

The framed record included a letter of authenticity from Wright’s first wife, Franka.

Wright’s platinum RIAA album for “The Wall” sold in 2005 for more than $40,000.

Starting with its inception in 1958, an album’s gold status was determined by $1 million in sales. That criterion was later amended to also require 500,000 units sold.

Album platinum status, created in 1976, indicates 1 million units sold.

One of the best-selling records in history, “Dark Side,” ironically, only achieved platinum status in 1990, because it was released three years before the platinum designation.

On June 4, 1998, the RIAA certified it 15× platinum.

Roger Waters album blocked in Italy

Posted June 21, 2017 by Floydian Slip

Sales of Roger Waters‘ new album “Is This the Life We Really Want” have been suspended in Italy over a claim of artwork plagiarism.

Italian artist Emilio Isgrò claims the redacted style of the artwork included with Waters’ album (top) infringes on his so-called “erasure technique” (bottom).

The album’s design is credited to Sean Evans, who also handled “creative direction” for the album; along with Danny Kamhaji and Dan Ichimoto.

Italian newspaper La Repubblica reports a Milan court has halted sales of the album, pending a hearing coming July 27.
