As we lead up to “Floydian Slip” Show #1,000 the week of June 8, we’re digging into the archives to share relics from the show’s past.
In December 1987, I was home from college for winter break, when my friend Greg Perez passed me a cassette copy he’d made from “The Dark Side of the Moon.” My knowledge of Pink Floyd was limited, but he assured me I needed to give it a listen.
If my memory’s correct, we were about to enter a bar in Winooski, Vt., just outside Burlington. And though I later labeled the J-card with a source of “CD,” I think Greg had duped it from an LP.
I usually cite that cassette — the “genesis cassette” — as what sparked my interest in the band, which led to my starting “Floydian Slip” a little more than a year later, January ’89.
So much for the dangers of illegal taping. I imagine the “cost” of that illegal bootleg has been paid back to the Floyd and their associates many (many) times over as a result of the show.
I was in middle school in 1987 captivated by the song and video for “Learning to Fly”. Great music with lyrics NOT about love or relationships. It intrigued me. So I got MLOR on tape and LOVED it. Interestingly enough, a friend introduced me to DSOTM after finding out my new interest in Floyd… and initially to my young ears which had been attuned to only 80s music, I didn’t like DSOTM. With time (ha!), I of course ended up loving that album and actually ended up enjoying most of their earlier albums over their more popular ones. My absolute all time favorite band, I’ve been to the Division Bell tour and been to most of Water’s tours. Love em!
I still really dig when I find an old soundboard tape on Youtube or elsewhere. The master tapes from great concerts just seem to disappear for decades and resurface online, they make for great listening!
Imagine how different your career would be if I had slipped you a copy of “ABBA Greatest Hits” instead.
Ladies and gentlemen, @gregger, the man himself!
