Roland Petit dead at 87

Posted July 11, 2011 by Floydian Slip

Celebrated choreographer and one-time Pink Floyd collaborator Roland Petit has died in Geneva, Switzerland. He was 87.

Petit formed his ballet company, Les Ballets de Paris de Roland Petit, in 1947, and would go on to work on a number of big Hollywood productions, including “Hans Christian Andersen” (1951), “Daddy Long Legs” (1955) “The Glass Slipper” (1955) and “Anything Goes” (1956).

But Floyd fans probably best know Petit for the project he staged with live music by the band in late-1972 and early-1973.

Suggested to him by his then-10-year-old daughter, “The Pink Floyd Ballet” was performed by Les Ballet de Marseille in November 1972 in Marseille and January 1973 in Paris, with Petit serving as artistic director and choreographer.

The band provided live renditions of “One of These Days,” “Careful With That Axe, Eugene,” “Obscured by Clouds/When You’re In” and “Echoes.”

Petit had lived in Switzerland for more than a decade. He’s survived by his wife, ballerina Zizi Jeanmaire, and his daughter, Valentine Petit.

YouTube offers some clips of the Pink Floyd Ballet performances.

Pink Floyd autographed guitar up for bid

Posted July 9, 2011 by Floydian Slip

A custom-painted guitar signed by the surviving members of Pink Floyd is on the auction block to benefit a favorite charity of David Gilmour.

Gilmour, Roger Waters and Nick Mason have all signed the pick guard of the Fender guitar, which has been custom designed with “Dark Side of the Moon” illustrations by artist Ian Emes.

Emmes, who also signed the guitar, is a British animator and film director who has created animated films shown during Floyd concerts and on their DVDs. His guitar artwork mimics the animations shown in concert when the band performs “Time.”

Proceeds of the auction will benefit Crisis, an organization working to end homelessness.

The project is well on its way to raising some serious coin for the organization: Bidding stands at $21,000, with the auction set to expire at 2:45 p.m. (ET) on July 14.

Place your bid online.

Official Pink Floyd Twitter account launched

Posted July 9, 2011 by Floydian Slip

EMI Records has launched a Twitter account for Pink Floyd, apparently part of the label’s “Why Pink Floyd?” reissue campaign.

Follow the account @whypinkfloyd.

The account first tweeted June 28. At this writing, it has 899 followers, but EMI’s strategy would appear to be unidirectional: The account follows no one.
